Taking a road trip? Make sure you are prepared
It should go without saying. You use you car every day, yet chances are you spend more time thinking about which radio station to enjoy than what is going on under the hood. Preventative maintenance is a very important aspect of car ownership and should never be taken lightly.
Pre-roadtrip checklist
As you prepare for a road trip, whether you are going up the coast, up the state or across the country it is important that you add preventative vehicle maintenance to the top of your to do list. Your car will endure long hours of constant movement, making it susceptible to issues from problems that may have been slowly building.
Mechanics and service stations located on highway off ramps are expensive, may employ questionable technicians, and could have to special order any number of parts. Don’t get stuck in wounded vehicle far from home.
What to check
Before you drive off into the sunset, make an appointment with your mechanic, or dealership for an oil change and a basic tune up. Quick lube services are great, but before you get on the road it is advisable to take it to a full service shop.
Be sure to tell them you plan to take the vehicle on a road trip and give an estimate of the mileage you plan to put on it. This allows the technicians to project and give you the best evaluation.
A few fairly inexpensive things you should do before a long distance drive:
Other things to remember
Beyond mechanics there are other important aspects of your vehicular travel that should not be overlooked.
Be sure to take precautions before you load up the car and take off anywhere outside of your town. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that lack of proper maintenance costs more than two billion dollars in lost wages, medical costs and property damage a year.
Pay a few bucks now for peace of mind later.

Braking Methods
Modern brakes were invented in the late 19th century, around the same time as the tyre. Up until then, vehicles had wooden wheels that were stopped by large wooden blocks, lowered into position by the driver using a simple lever system. When tyres were invented, the wooden block system wasn t good enough to stop them at the higher speeds they could achieve, which meant that a new braking system had to be invented. To see the basic principles of modern braking, it is easiest to look at a bicycle. Basically, when you put pressure on the brakes, the pressure is transferred through cables to pull small pads onto the side of the tyres, and the force of the friction against the tyres causes them to stop. In fact, cars originally used this very same cable system, but it was found not to work so well at high speeds. Instead, the cables were replaced with hydraulic fluid, which works to transfer the pressure the driver puts on the pedal to the brakes. This works because the fluid cannot get much smaller when pressure is put on it, meaning that pressure at one end is transferred to the other ” much like water flowing through a pipe. However, if this brake fluid leaks even a little, then the brakes may not work properly any more, which is why it s very important to check your brake fluid regularly. Of course, in modern cars, there are other mechanisms apart from pure pressure to help you brake. Most cars now have a vacuum system to create more friction in the brakes, and a servo system that uses the car s own speed to help your pressure have more of an impact. One word of warning, though: some cars now have fully computerised brakes, where pushing on the pedal sends an electrical signal to turn on electrically-powered brakes. While this makes it much easier to brake, it is also more prone to failure, meaning that if your car s computer breaks you might find it impossible to stop. Until this technology has been around a little longer, it s probably best to stick to traditional mechanical braking methods.

Car Accident Checklist: Are You Prepared?
I?ve got a confession to make. I?ve been in a car accident before. Granted, it wasn?t my fault at all (both my opinion and the insurance company?s opinion). However, once it happened, I realized that I should have been better prepared for the car accident the day it happened. Since I realized this, I decided to make a checklist for things to have in case of a car accident. Here we go
1) Insurance Papers. Make sure you have your insurance papers ready to give to the other party in case they need to see them. These can also come in handy to give to the Police if they arrive on the scene of the accident. In some states, having car insurance is mandatory for the operation of a motor vehicle and you can be fined if you don?t have any insurance. Make sure you insurance paperwork is in order before finding out that it is necessary to have.
2) Pen and paper. Guess what? Most people (myself included until recently) don?t carry around the necessary equipment in order to write down the other party?s information for insurance claim purposes. Make sure you buy some pens that actually have ink in them and some decent paper in order to write the driver?s information. Stow these handy items in your glove box and you?ll be ready.
3) Digital camera or cell phone camera. This can come in quite handy in the case of a disagreement of facts over what happened at an accident. After the accident happens, taking a few snap shots of both your vehicle and the other driver?s vehicle can be great evidence if there is a trial or if either insurance agency tries to deny responsibility. A lot of the newest cell phones come equipped with cameras inside of them that can take and store a huge amount of digital camera photos. Use your cell phone camera to take some on the scene snap shots.
There are a whole bunch of other important tips to keep in mind that make these look like the tip of the iceberg. Learn them all and you?ll be prepared.

Just be there.
Just be there
By John G Campbell
If you are stuck in traffic do your stress levels go thought the roof, do you bang the steering wheel and shout at the dead still cars in front of you. Come on come on let s go, I just gotta get to that meeting, I just gotta, I just cannot afford to be late?
WOH, Take a pause
Imagine you are outside the car looking in at your agitated self…Does all that commotion make any difference? Does it make the traffic start moving again?
It is not improving the quality of life for you or those around you, and it is almost certain that it will be damaging your health. The traffic will only start moving again as soon as the obstruction is clear. Getting angry about the situation will not make even the slightest bit of difference.
You know there is nothing you can do to alleviate the situation. So take control of that little intense aggressive world, change it and relax in the moment, take a deep breath and “Just be there”.
Relax in the car seat, turn your head side to side a few times, roll your shoulders, shake your arms out and adjust the position of your legs. You could put some music on or just sit back and enjoy doing nothing (but do take your car out of gear and put on the handbrake!!!)
In our busy hectic lives there are very few opportunities where you can just to do nothing. Snatch that moment and enjoy it, indulge yourself. Realise that time will pass without significance. The consequence of delay is something that can to be laid to rest at a later more convenient time.
There is no reason or blame all you need to do is…
“Just be there”
Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes and the grass grows by itself.

Are Radar Detectors Legal in the US and in which States are they Prohibited?
A good number of the people with cars in the United States have their own radar detectors. Their reason is that they feel that the speed limit at present is very low. Most of the American people are not satisfied with moderate speed while driving. They want to be the fastest driver on the road as well as get to the places they re going in record time; they want to be always in the race.
The radar detector serves as their alarm whenever there are police near them. Once the radar detector alarm sounds, they can ease on the gas and slow down their speed.
Because of the radar detectors being known to every motorist, cops are hiding, in alleyways or behind bridges in order to avoid being detected by the radar detectors.
Motorists on the other hand are being clever themselves, they are aware of these techniques from the police, so more enhanced, top-dollar detectors have entered the market.
Though the policemen are always improving their chances of catching the radar detector users, they are unable to make the streets of the United States radar detector-free.
Radar detectors are legal in many cities and states in the United States. But this does not mean that radar detector units are legal in all of the states in the US.
Here are some of the states that deem radar detectors illegal:
1. The usage of radar detectors are prohibited in the Commonwealth of Virginia. They have laws banning the use of radar detectors. Not only are radar detectors illegal to use in Virginia, they are also illegal to have in the vehicle.
2. Radar detectors and radar jammers are illegal in the District of Columbia. The passing of their laws to ban the use of radar detectors was set in 1995.
3. In Illinois, radar detectors are only regulated in commercial vehicles of over 26,001 pounds.
4. On US military bases, they are legal to have but illegal to use.
5. Radar jammers are illegal in the states of Utah, California, Oklahoma, Colorado and Nebraska.
6. Radar detectors are not specifically regulated, but things hanging from windshields are not permitted in the state of Minnesota.
7. For motor vehicles over 18,000 pounds and any other commercial motor vehicles over 10,000 pounds in New York, radar detectors are illegal.
And other states that prohibit the use of radar detectors are the following:
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Colorado
Delaware
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
Mew Mexico
North Carolina
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Vermont
Washington
Wisconsin
Wyoming
The state of Connecticut on the contrary has cancelled its anti-radar detector law in 1998 which make this radar detector now legal in this state.
